June 2020 Newsletter

Saying Goodbye
I have been honored to serve as your pastor for the last three years. I have enjoyed getting to know you, your church, and P-town. We have made some difficult decisions together and lived through some difficult times. If I have hurt you in any way, I am deeply sorry. If you have hurt me, or my family, I forgive you. Moving forward we both have new opportunities for mission and ministry in the Name of Jesus Christ.

Pastor Joey and Pastor Tiffany are two of the nicest people I have had the privilege of knowing. I have watched them both come up through our system and have been blessed by their gifts and graces. I have encouraged Pastor Joey to love you, no matter what. I have told him about each and every one of you and encouraged him to care for you and help you move out of this crisis into a bright new future.

Now, I encourage you, the people of PTUMC, to love him and his family. This is the time to break the cycle and show you are children of God, disciples of Jesus Christ. Show that first to your new pastor and his family. Show it to each other. Show it to your community. Show it to the world. Love each other, and you will be the Church, the Body of Christ for such a time as this. I hope, and believe, that something good is about to happen in P-town.

June 14th is my last official day as your pastor. Pastor Joey starts July 1st. I have arranged special worship experiences for June 21st and 28th via Facebook and You Tube. We will not worship again before I am gone. We may not even be able to meet face to face in smaller groups. Saying “goodbye” will not be easy, but it never is. Perhaps it would be better to say, “till we meet again.” Because we will meet again. Perhaps in our travels or church events. But most assuredly when Christ’s Kingdom is fully realized.

Until then friends, may peace of God that exceeds all understanding keep your hearts and minds safe in Christ Jesus. Pastor Mark
Ways to Connect
Even though we are apart we can still connect. We will be sending more regular mailings to update everyone on what is going on. We can call and write each other. We are also using the internet to help during this time. I am offering daily video devotions as well as Sunday messages for your use. I am also live on Facebook every Wednesday morning from 9am-10am for a time of prayer, feel free to join live and chat.

Giving to the Church
The church needs your financial support to keep its vital ministry alive; and this is true now more than ever. Because we are not meeting weekly, our offerings are likely to suffer. That being said I am encouraged by those who you who have sent in checks and offerings to support your church during this time. As of now is this the best way to support your church; by sending in checks via mail (or dropping them in the mailbox on the side of the church). We are checking the mail and making weekly deposits. We need to face the reality that some of our congregation members may not be able to give right now. People have lost jobs, financial situations have changed. So if you are in a position where this crisis has not impacted your financial situation, please continue to support the church. Perhaps you have already received your stimulus check from the government. If you are not in need of this money, please consider using it to support your church, Pat’s Table, our Food Pantry and other charitable organizations.

Connecting with Pastor Joey Garcea (pronounced Gar-Sha)
COVID-19 may have stopped several aspects of our lives, but it cannot stop of the appointment process. As of now, Rev. Joey Garcea will be your pastor starting July 1st. Normally we have procedures for pastoral transitions, and I would be your pastor until June 30th and Pastor Joey would take over everything July 1st. But these are not normal times. I encourage you to connect to Pastor Joey and his wife Rev. Tiffany Garcea on Facebook. They are providing encouragement during this time through worship, devotions, and reading stories to the kids. Follow them and let them know you are praying for them and looking forward to their ministry. I (Pastor Mark) am still your pastor, but perhaps we can all use this time to transition in new and unconventional ways.

We hope all of you are safe, healthy, and staying home, we know this is no fun but hopefully we can be together soon.

June Little Thoughts
This is the continuation of the May Little Thoughts
Hope these add some laughter to your world this month
Pastor Dave Charlton tells us; after a worship service at First Baptist Church in Newcastle, Kentucky, a mother with a fidgety seven-year old boy told me how she finally got her son to sit still and quiet. About halfway through the sermon, she leaned over and whispered, “If you don’t be quiet, Pastor Charlton is going to lose his place and will have to start his sermon all over again!”. It worked.
A little girl was sitting on her grandfather’s lap as he read her a bedtime story. From time to time, she would take her eyes off the book and reach up to touch his wrinkled check. She was alternately stroking her own check, then his again. Finally she spoke up, “Grandpa, did God make you?” “Yes sweetheart,” he answered, “God made me a long time ago.” “Oh,” she paused. “Grandpa did God make me too?” “Yes, indeed, honey.” he said, “God made you just a little while ago.” Feeling their respective faces again, she observed, “God’s getting better at it, isn’t he?”
A little girl, dressed in her Sunday best was running as fast as she could, trying not to be late for Bible class. As she ran she prayed, “Dear Lord, please don’t let me be late! Dear Lord, please don’t let me be late!” While she was running and praying, she tripped on a curb and fell, getting her clothes dirty and tearing her dress. She got up, brushed herself off, and started running again. As she ran she once again began pray, “Dear Lord, please don’t let me be late….But please don’t shove me either!”
A Sunday School teacher asked her class why Joseph and Mary took Jesus with
them to Jerusalem. A small child replied: “They couldn’t get a babysitter.”
A Sunday School teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her five and six year olds. After explaining the commandment to “honor thy father and thy mother,” she asked ,“is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?” without missing a beat one little boy answered, “Thou shall not kill.”
Oh, to think like a child…..it certainly would make this world a better place!
